Architecture of the Capitol Building

One of the most well known buildings in America is the Capitol Building. It holds great importance in its use as well as how much it contributed to the architecture of the United States. This building has many different parts to it that make it unique and that made it such an important building to history. It does, however, not look the same as it did when it was fist built as many additions and alterations have been made to it throughout the years. From the outside, the most noticeable aspect of the Capitol building would no doubt be the large dome at the top. Architect Thomas Walter who was at the time a very successful federal architect designed the dome. It was later on completed under the design of a different architect from Boston. 100 thousand dollars was then used to construct a new dome under Walter’s design. This was only the beginning of many changes that were to come for the dome. From the inside of the Capitol Building, the Rotunda is one of the most noticeable sights. Located in the center of the second floor, this large round room is used for ceremonies and is full of many historical paintings on its walls, one of which is of George Washington. As well as paintings, the Rotunda features many statues of former presidents as well as a few other important figures. A final aspect of the Capitol Building’s architecture is the Hall of Columns. The hall is 100 feet in length, has high ceilings, and is lined by 28 marble columns.
