American Foursquare

The American Foursquare House is one of the most popular styles for homes in America that was developed in the late 1800s. The other names that they are called by include box house, cube, and square type American house. These homes are mostly seen in the suburbs and can be found everywhere across America; basically, it’s the epitome of the “all American home”. This style of suburban homes was created and used so widely because of multiple reasons. Probably the most important reason as to why there were so many built is because they had a low cost. This is mainly because of the boxy/cubical structure that it has so it takes full advantage of small lots. From the inside of the building, the architecture is very similar to the outside in the sense of its geometry. The average American Foursquare has three four rooms on the first floor, and three also square rooms on the second, all on top of a full basement. The inside as well as the outside also have nice creative touches to it that allow it to stand out from other homes and give it a more sophisticated look. These certain features include art details on the front entrance, nice fireplaces, and built in bookshelves. The roofs are in the shape of a pyramid and most houses have a small sized front porch. Doors are mainly set off to one side, but other that that the homes are very symmetrical. Overall, the American Foursquare is a very important type of building when talking about American architecture.
